In the 19th century, several German-speaking families settled in Budapest. They arrived from Germany, Switzerland and Holland. These remarkably influential families – the Hagemachers, the Drehers and the Ganz's, to mention but a few – formed a community, which, joining efforts with the Biberauer-Bodoky family, founded the first German-speaking Reformed congregation in Pest in the year 1859. The building was designed in the elegant and fashionable Neo Gothic style, and in 1878 the construction work of the Hold Street facility was completed.

Between the World Wars, church life flourished here. The German-speking congregation maintained a hospital (Bethesda) and an orphanage (Bethania). It was at this place that the Sunday School Movement was started, the Blue Cross Association and the Workers' Charity Organisation were founded.

After 1945, the congregation became much smaller in number. The community met in an Alkotmány street apartment for their regular worship. In this period of time, the church building served as the taylor workshop and the costume store for the Hungarian Television.

The year 1996 brought a great change in the history of the congregation. The building was renovated and its original function was restored. In the basement a large church hall was built, together with a kitchen and bathrooms. The gallery was completed with a conference room, a nursery and offices. The building was fitted with heating and an elevator.

The church was officially returned to its original owner, the German-speaking congregation on March 3rd 2002, on the occasion of its re-dedication, 57 years after it was confiscated. This day was also to be remembered by another significant event. The original church bell presented to the church by the Emperor William in 1903 disappeared during WWII. On this special day it was replaced and dedicated.

The German-Language Church has been hosting the Protestant Forum since 1997. The annually organised Protestant Spring and Protestant Autumn are times of cultural programmes, lectures and group discussions.

The church is in close contact with the German-Language Lutheran and the Roman Catholic churches.
